“TV meets web. Web meets TV”

Essentially this will harness the power of the web like the ability to watch youtube , netflix , hulu videos whenever we want and stuff like photos , email , etc and bring it to our big television screens .  Quoting directly from googles site on google tv  “Google TV is a new experience made for television that combines the TV you know and love with the freedom and power of the Internet. Watch an overview video below, sign up for updates, and learn more about how to develop for Google TV.” It’s set to come this fall and has already a wide set of partners like Sony & Logitech.  Not only will watching videos , checking mail and browsing be available but since it’s built off of android applications will also make an appearance on the new google tv. Developers will soon have access to develop android apps built for the tv screens much like developers had a chance to port apps from iPhone to iPad google will do the same in taking existing apps like Pandora etc and port them for google tv. Web developers will also have time to make their site google tv friendly.

To Do is a great application for you productivity users out there who really want a GTD (Getting Things Done ) type system integrated into a To Do App. Appigos really made one of the best apps in the market for making a simple to-do list while having a whole set of extras and additional features to make it worth the 10$. Making projects, check lists , normal to do’s are all available in the app while maintaining a great simple to use touch-interface . You can quick to-do’s or more featured packed ones with options like due dates , repeated tasks (monthly bills  etc) and many other options like call a contact , email a contact , or visit a website. The application also has the ability to sync with other services like remember the milk and sync across other multiple applications it also has the option to send alerts not only to the phone when something is due but also send emails to an account to warn you of a due or overdue item. To really organize your life and common tasks with the iPhone appigo’s to do app , it really provides you with the tools to do it .

Now note this is not 100% confirmed by apple as the new phone or  final model, it could very well be a test phase prototype.

The design for the new phone has changed dramatically from the curve/ergonomic design to a flat and more rounded device while still keeping its same front design. The screen has a higher resolution than the previous models and now has an integrated front-facing camera for self portrait shots and video.  As for the buttons on the side the volume rocker is now split into two separate buttons while the same silent mode switch is still in its original location and the traditional sim card slot is now a micro-sim slot. The top features the same power/sleep button a 3.5 mm headphone jack with an additional mic on the top as well as bottom though the top could possibly be used for noise-cancellation while in phone calls.

Some other extra features on the phone include a flash on the back camera though no megapixel rate has been stated yet, the phone also has a 16% larger battery and is about 3 grams heavier.

The internals were also dissected by Gizmodo and a picture of the hardware and new thinner bigger battery can be seen from the picture below.

Personal Opinions

My thoughts on the design is while it just at first doesn’t seem apple like or something that would meet Steve Jobs standards , with the seams and extra buttons , apple is all about simplicity and almost never adds more physical aspects as they upgrade more likely they make the internals faster and smaller while keeping the outside simplistic. I also will have to get used to the new shape of the device if this really is going to be the new 4g phone its something I’ll have to hold to actually get the feel of the rounded shape. Though I do agree that with these new buttons that they will integrate well with the 4.0 OS and updates to the iPhone operating system to come as they can play an additional role in applications like games etc which would add to the flexibility of the device.  Internal component wise  heavier by 3 grams doesen’t bother me much as the new battery should finally add more life to the device that I’m constantly charging .

What I’m looking for mainly hardware wise  in the new phone that isn’t yet confirmed is:

- Better quality camera 5+ megapixels

-2 or enhanced bottom speakers whether they keep one or add another speaker I just want better audio quality out of the device

-HD screen and hopefully the new material on the back isn’t as fingerprint attractive and more protective towards the phone

Bundled with the new upcoming 4.0 OS this device can really reinvent the iPhone and start a new spark in the phone market. Though again do realize that nothing is 100% confirmed as of now its still rumors and speculation we’ll have to wait towards the future on further announcements.

Multitasking

The feature of multitasking was a long awaited feature to be added but apple finally unveiled it during the keynote . They did all while maintaining battery life and current state of apps , for example when your in an app like Tap Tap revenge and have to check your mail you can simply double tap the home button and up pops the multitask menu then simply open up mail and once your done can do the same thing and resume your current tap tap game.

Folder App Management

Another feature highly requested in the community and another of which is available on the jailbroken side has now been released for the 4.0 and has done it in a nice seamless way. The user simply holds an icon the home screen wait for them to jiggle and then drags an app over another app and it forms a folder and then asks the user to rename it . A great example is featured here from one of the fellow blog writers picture @wee493 on twitter.

Mail Box Improvements

The mailbox improvements help in the business area of the iphone as checking mail is much easier and more convenient as it puts all your emails into one inbox though the seperate email inboxes are still available if you need to read the mail sorted out , it also now threads your email conversations for example if you have 7 emails from one person it threads the email replies so you don’t have mail cluttering your inbox.

iAD

iAd’s is apples new market approach to changing the advertising industry on the iPhone, iTouch, iPad app store. They first tried earlier purchasing a company called Ad Mob but didn’t fall through with the deal and later purchased Quattro another ad company. They essentially will be taking the Ads in that are integrated in some apps and change them to stuff that matches what your viewing for example if your in an entertainment app it has Ads on the latest movies and the iAd will give you an in app ad and won’t bring you into safari , it will be able to play video, download apps while in an ad all from the iAd interface. This is a controversial topic on how apple will do though it does make the ads more interesting it can interfere with the apps and get a bit annoying. Steve claims its not a get rich quick scheme as 60% goes to the developers he claims that its all for the developers, so that those who make free apps can still make revenue by making an iAd.

*Wallpapers-users can now have home screen wall papers rather than the ordinary black home screen

*Bluetooth Devices- Bluetooth keyboards are now compatible with the iphone and touch so you can hook up a wireless keyboard up and type away

*Spell Check- Spell check is now included and makes a red underscore under the incorrectly spelled word with options for corrections.

*Spot light search- Search on the phone now includes an option to search google or wikipedia for stuff not found locally on the phone

*SMS Search & character count – SMS now has search available to find certain words mentioned in the texts and even has an included character count when sending texts.

*Album Info- Albums details can now be viewed like artist , thumbnails etc.

*Camera Zoom and Video focusing while recording is now available

along with many other small changes both interface wise and software.

Overall the 4.0 OS is a big update and I’d recommended anyone to update even if your jailbroken run a restore when it comes out and if you still need your jailbroken apps then wait for the firmware to be cracked which shouldn’t be less then 2 weeks once 4.0 is released. They added many new features some rumored and some not expected overall the 4.0 iphone/itouch/ipad os will add a whole new feel to the phone and really touches up on things like customizing , productivity , and overall better experience with your device. Mainly I’m looking to see how they worked on battery life and how the device will maintain its reliability and speed with all the new features. Only time will tell , stay tuned for more updates and how to ge tthe 4.0 developer beta for your phone.

My overall rating of the product is a 7 / 10  , If your looking for a decent cheap portable camera to record vlogs or those vacation moments this is the perfect camera for good lighting situations both indoors and outdoors if your looking for expandability this doesn’t have much external outlets other than the HDMI out put for your TV playback , though quality is great for its size and price.

The controller resembles Nintendo’s Wii remote and nunchuck in where one is used with one hand while the sub-controller is used in your other hand for other various tasks in gaming. Gaming now a days has shifted majorly in not only the games produced but how we play them as well , whether or not this will be a huge competitor towards the motion- gaming market is yet to be seen, time will only tell. Though in my personal opinion Sony will have a lot more to add to the move controller to compete with Project Natal in were they use only video to recognize the gamer and turn there body to a controller. The market still needs more innovation to press forward and I think by late 2010 we’ll start to see more and more updates as well as get a better idea on how these products work.

Priced at .99 cents this new app approved by apple allows video recording from a device that was only formerly capable of taking only snapshots. Unless however you were jailbroken and used an app like Cycorder. None the less this app offers an okay frame rate and quality modes of high and low, it also offers multiple sharing options to different sites or friends that have the same app with wi-fi share enabled . To top it off it has live effects that can be used during your recording , it also adapts to landscape and portrait shots. To see more check out my video review posted below:

This winter break I was flying over to California and needed to bring my gadgets with me of course to use over the 12 hour flight. The main one being my iPhone for music , video , apps etc. Problem was that I was worried about the battery life though my phone is jailbroken there are some extra features that contribute to my battery usage compared to non-jail broken phones.  So here are some tips for both the non-jailbroken and jailbroken iphone users.

1. Free up memory – If your on a non-jailbroken phone a great app to get to free up background processes and free memory on your phone/touch is MemoryInfo a simple button click frees up memory for your phone to keep it running smooth and fast. If your on a jailbroken phone with SBSettings installed it has a similar function and even gives you options to manually end background apps like “Ipod” etc.
2. Screen Brightness – The iphone and touch’s screen takes a tole on it battery if its constantly on especially during a video  if the brightness is turned up all the way , turning it to a lower settings or also turning off the auto-brightness feature which tunes the phones brightness depending on environment.
3. Network Settings- Network settings like Wi-Fi, 3G, Edge etc are huge battery drainers , turning off Wi-Fi when not in a wi-fi zone or don’t require a connection then switch it off to save life also in times were you wont need to take calls or really need to save life turn of your 3G/edge signal for example at school when I really don’t expect to call friends or text them then I turn 3G off. Also if you’ll be on a flight or a time were you just want to turn off  all types of network signal off then just switch to airplane mode to switch off 3G ,Wi-fi , etc.
4. Notifications- Notifications from application updates that are constant can take a toll your life as well , the new 3.0 update gives you great options to adjust which apps notify you and what for for example for some twitter apps can notify you specifically for DM , @ replies , etc.
5. Push- Push from email clients or exchange servers etc are one of the biggest battery life drainers though haven’t been as bad with the 3.0 update , though still users experience issues with push emails taking up to even 10% of their battery life . Some things you can do is go into the settings for your email and changing time that email checks for updates by hour or even set them to manually check only when you open the email client.
6. Updates- Whether your using the regular app store or even using Cydia on the jailbroken phone always keep up to date on your apps so older versions never have leaks or older mods don’t effect battery life and your apps stay up to date.
7. Sleep- Some people forget to turn there phones or ipods to sleep mode when using it for example your screen doesn’t need to be running when your listening to music so why not just turn it to sleep mode to save life.
8. Percent Battery- Percentage battery is much easier to tell your battery life compared to the visual bar, for the iphone 3Gs you can go into your general settings to toggle the percentage battery or on a jailbroken phone you can use SbSettings to toggle on the same feature this allows you to view your battery life much easier.
9. Charging Habbits- If  you experienced rapid drainage on your battery lately try to change your charging habits , a writer over at DuncsWeb DanofMayz recommended on only charging your phone when its down to 2% and then charging to full so your battery stays in cycle also try to run down your battery to 0 and doing a complete recharge every month or so to recycle your battery.
10. Back Up – Back up batteries are now available all over the place for both iPhone and touch jailbroken or not these external gadgets that you charge up and can plug into your device to charge can work almost as quick as an hour or two to  give you nearly 90% new life. Though this does require the need for another gadget to carry , there are also other great alternatives like cases/accessories to put your device into to charge when your device runs low. A great battery case to check out is the Mophie Juice Pack.

Hope these 10 tips help you reserve your battery life to keep your device running and extend your use for videos, music ,etc.

A lot of talk went on about how long it would take apple to shut down this small Florida company but months passed as both tried to settle the dispute behind the eyes of the media, as Psystar continued to sell their machines.

The code behind the project was based off the original OSx86 project were they claimed that Psystar had no permission to use their code and even reworked it so that it forbids commercial usage. Psystar even estimated a 70,000 computer sales in the year of 2009 , that was till recently when apple finally shut down the company.

On Tuesday the federal judge ruled Psystar to stop selling the Mac clones and even pay fines reaching up to $2.7 million instead of continuing the rest of the trial in federal court. All operations of the company were immediately hut down including sales,  site etc. Though the company claimed that its Rebel EFI software which allows the installment of OSX on the machines is not apart of the settlement.

A success in apple’s part but this still rages the argument of Hackintoshes and the community wanting to see Apple someday widen the range for OSX by allowing it on other hardware/machines. This will also be end for Psystar for the most part a long run in which took sometime were  a rises the question on what took so long for Apple to shutdown this company but I guess if you want something completely ridden of then it takes time and in the end Apple comes out on top.

Whether your at an internet cafe, library , or even a friends computer always take precaution when using a pc not yours especially if your going to be purchasing something online and sending valuable data over the open network.

1- DONT REMEMBER

Always make sure when browsing the web to uncheck that “ Remember Me, Keep me signed in , etc” buttons on login screens so that your data is stored on a public or other persons computer.

2- Carry along a Browser

Nowadays browsers can fit on your pen drive! So why not go out and find your browser of choice and see if threes a portable version available , for example I use Firefox portable and some settings I like to check while browsing on public pc’s.

*Clear Private Data on Close

- Clearing things like history, cache , downloads etc once I close the browser is a good way to keep my data safe and not accessible to any one else using the computer

If at all possible try not to make online purchases or reveal data like your credit card # etc on a public computer, though if you are make sure the site is legit, your using a HTTPS protocol and also if possible use services like PayPal so that you don’t physically have to be putting card numbers etc.

4- Remote Connection is your friend

Why not just use your computer from another computer it sounds troubling at first but now a days with secure services like

- Go To My PC

etc

These services make it easy to connect to your computer at home  from any location using a web app to access your pc and as for logins there 128 bit ssl encrypted for services like Citrix Go to My PC so your data safe and secure.

Now continuing on to using actual open networks or wi-fi hotspots on the go , safety is always a concern…

5-  Open Wifi

When using any open network whether its on your laptop or mobile phone always be aware people can be watching or packet sniffing ( Tracing the packets you send to the internet) Some ways to stay secure

- If possible use a secured network

- VPN is always a great solution Virtual private Network acts as a software layer on top of an existing network for protection

- If totally needed using software like Truecrypt to encrypt your data to make only visible to you once provided a master password can be very secure way of keeping your data locked both on the network and physically if your pc was to get stolen

Lastly just play it smart visit websites you know are secure and when at all possible resist from using sensitive data until you can get to a secure location or computer, also just remember to never save data to public computers , hope these tips help you next time you log into a public network or computer.

The theme for the blog has changed to a 3 Column theme that also supports a feature post ticker at the top of the page showing you featured content. The theme also makes navigating to certain categories such as News, Applications , How to much easier and also has a nav bar for the website pages. Overall the theme is more professional and makes it easier for you the readers to navigate.

Also as some of you may notice since the recent problems of adsense we haven’t had any ads on the site till recent were we switched to the “Adbrite ” network and have inserted two ads to the side of the site and as well as in link ads and web page ads. Lastly I wanted to mention my current project in the works that will be released in the near future. As some people have noticed wee493 and I purchased the domain ” thetechworld.org ” I plan to make the domain our home page for all the tech-world content such as videos, blog posts, podcasts etc. A one stop shop site for your feeds as well , a site were you can pick your favorite sites as you would in google reader and even submit your own site to the community in hopes of more views etc. Another big contributing part of site will be the PODCAST NETWORK as of now we run one podcast The Tech-World Podcast featuring the latest technology news for the week . Our plan is to unravel at least 3-5 + more technology based shows . More information on the project will be coming soon  .
