Google TV announced “TV meets web. Web meets TV

The new Google TV announcement was made today at Google’s I/O conference. The new project aims to bring together the power of the web that we all love and combine it with our televisions. The Google TV will be built into some of the new tv’s to come and others will be able to purchase a separate dvr like box for their TV’s.

“TV meets web. Web meets TV”

Essentially this will harness the power of the web like the ability to watch youtube , netflix , hulu videos whenever we want and stuff like photos , email , etc and bring it to our big television screens . Quoting directly from googles site on google tv “Google TV is a new experience made for television that combines the TV you know and love with the freedom and power of the Internet. Watch an overview video below, sign up for updates, and learn more about how to develop for Google TV.” It’s set to come this fall and has already a wide set of partners like Sony & Logitech. Not only will watching videos , checking mail and browsing be available but since it’s built off of android applications will also make an appearance on the new google tv. Developers will soon have access to develop android apps built for the tv screens much like developers had a chance to port apps from iPhone to iPad google will do the same in taking existing apps like Pandora etc and port them for google tv. Web developers will also have time to make their site google tv friendly.

The browsing experience will all be based off of google’s chrome browser a fast and web kit built browser that will be ported for ease of use on television screens worldwide. Google Voice to launch desktop application?

Recently google aquired Gizmo5, a voip company similar to skype. Rumors have been swhirling arround that google has been testing a desktop application for google voice internally. If this is true it could be bad news for skype. If this voice application has chat, like skype, many users may switch over because of voices’ ability to call land lines for free. (Though most likely this application will lack some of skypes key features like video calls and file transfers.)This is good for users and I think it may be the push google voice needs to become more mainstream. Currently the average person has no clue what google voice is but a desktop application may change that.

Youtube’s new layout goes Live

Youtube , the popular video broadcasting site has over gone many layout and redesign changes throughout its time be it good or bad they tend to beta test the layout for some users and in time roll it out to all the users. Today the new layout was featured to all users with the idea in mind to make it simpler for new and power users of youtube to get a ease of use feel and at the same time convenient features all at hand.

The new design offers :

- New Video Que Panel of related and more user videos all in one pane , it also features another box if your viewing a subscription video it will go through your subscription box and watch videos in the sequential order they were uploaded , thus the new button next to the play button when viewing a subscription video.

-Details Box has been moved under with an expandable pane and a views statistics from youtubes insight program has been integrated in as well.

-The comment and rating system has added a @ reply feature very similar to sites like twitter to direct your reply in the commenting thread it also has taken away the 5 star rating system which i personally liked over the new I like or Dislike the video there is no middle option for rating content either you like or dislike .

-As for the other options like substitles , annotations , sharing features etc are all added into these new web 2.0 like buttons under the details box and above the video itself.

Overall the new layout does focus more on the content and simplifies everything into general boxes rather than multiple , though now it has a more plain feeling to the page it does appeal to some new users in that its easy to navigate though for existing and power users this layout may pose and issue , also the previous methods that we’ve all gotten used to as producers of content like description in the right and rate 5 stars etc have all become routine for us to tell our viewers and now with change the producers have to change they’re methods as the layout changes.

Mobile RSS iPhone app review

About a month ago I was looking for a good rss reader for the iPhone. I did some searches, but I had a hard time finding one that I liked and that synced with google reader. I hauled my search once I came across Mobile RSS.
Mobile RSS has been working great for me for at least a month now. You can view each feed individually or one feed with “All Subscriptions” in order of date published. At the bottom of every feed regardless of weather it’s the master feed or an individual you have the option to view just new posts or all posts. This feature is nice to free up space when you just want to see new posts or go back and reread an older post.
Though this app is great you have to pay to remove the ads. I was fortunate enough to get the paid version before it was paid. But now there is a free version with ads at the bottom of every post (which are not that annoying), a $2.99 version (what I have) which is the free version without ads, and a $4.99 version with the only extra feature being searching your feeds.
I would recommend trying out the free version for a week or two and if you find that this app fits your needs go for the $2.99 version.

Great Alternatives to Microsoft Office

Microsoft Office is a great tool for messing around with things like word documents, spreadsheets , power points and more but not all people have or want to spend the cash on software that they may already own on previous machines. No need to buy extra licenses just go out and try some of these great alternatives.

GOOGLE DOCUMENTS

Google’s cloud service of applications gives you all the suite of apps provided in office but all stored on the web and free to use as so long you have a Gmail account. It also supports functionality to upload word documents etc if needed. Also combined with using Google gears you can access and edit your documents offline.

Zoho Office

Another great tool for storing all your data on the cloud and having all the suites of apps in one easy to access site. Not only does it feature a docs editor , spreadsheet and PowerPoint app but it has some extras like an online mail account, notebook, wiki , planner ,meeting , invoice , project planner and more.

Open Office

Still want a desktop app for your office needs open office is a great free office suite that runs cross platform and is completely free to use for whatever needs and or purpose , it has all your needs from word processing to graphic databases all in a nice desktop app.

Notepad ++

Just need a great word processing tool that’s simple and easy to use and still packs a lot of great features. Notepad++ is notepad on steroids and has great built in features like syntax highlighting if your a programmer and is great for taking quick notes or typing up a story or blog post.

Still not convinced…

Still want to stick with Microsoft office well if you are might as well try the new Office 2010 beta available at Microsoft site for download.

How to Get Four Google Searches Inside of One Tab!

Have you ever been in the situation where you have been multi-tasking and you are getting tired of switching tabs to look through search results? Well if you have ever been in that situation I have a solution for you. Today I will be explaining to you how to get four different google searches inside of one tab.

The first thing you will need to do is open up a new web browser window. The next step is to go to the following website: http://www.googlegooglegooglegoogle.com, or just click here. Now you are done!

This site has a few features such as hitting the “X” button on the top left of a search will close a search, so this means you will be able to have either 1,2,3 or 4 searches depending on how many topics you need to search. You can also hit the green arrow pointing to the right to go to a new URL.

Must have productivity apps for the Iphone/Ipod Touch

If your an Iphone/ipod touch user like myself then these applications are a must have for better productivity and getting the most out of your device. Some of these applications are free while others cost money but all in my opinion are worth it and help in efficiency & save time in the long run when doing simple tasks.

Evernote- The mobile version of the online note taking tool evernote allows you to sync notes between your phone and online account documenting everything either with text , photos , or even recordings off your iphone mic. It makes it even easier with text recognition to find the note you need when you need it.

Yammer- Based off the online business social network for “What are you working on” yammer is a twitter type network for you and your online co-workers it has a nice clean interface and even has push notifications etc when someone is contacting you very nice for a small group project or collaboration tool.

News Stand- One of the best packed RSS readers in the app store featuring a great interface for reading them , even a newspaper type look for exploring the feeds and has support for sync with google reader and many other features included in the app.

Lastly I want to end with a big tip, on my phone i have a seperate page specifically for websites some people forget that you can bookmark the sites icons to your home screen & I find it a great way to access the sites quickly for example I have “ My school online-gradebook , Duncsweb, Adrianstech and many more sites there for quick access.

Check out theses apps and play around with them most of them come in handy and can be put to great use and some even integrate well with other apps or have support for sync with popular services like Google Reader , docs etc if you need to port over anything. News: Google SPDY Protocol to speed up the web

If you haven’t heard the news this week Google is planning on speeding up the web with their new internet protocol called “ SPDY” to replace the HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) which has been the standard which allowed browsers to load one page on the internet it wasn’t meant for loading all the css , images , video etc. That’s were the SPDY protocol would come in, Google announced web pages to load up to 55 % faster. Though Google did state that they aren’t looking to completely over throw the HTTP protocol but to have SPDY play a role in addition to the HTTP. As of of now it will only be supported in Google Chrome, which will make it run much faster though it is still a possibility that it could be implemented as a web standard.

Google also stated that the SPDY protocol isn’t starting from scratch and still uses HTTP headers but it will overide some parts like connection management & data transfer formats. As for the wide support as a web standard google would have to work with the major browser companies to support the SPDY protocol , convincing the big players like Mozilla Firefox which shouldn’t be hard to jump on the bandwagon the challenge would be switching over Microsoft Internet Explorer to support this new improved protocol.

More work still needs to be done to perfect and expand this project but it is something to look forward to in the coming months.

Here’s probably something you didn’t know: Contrary to popular belief, software maker Adobe Systems did not get its name from adobe, a material “material composed of sand, sandy clay and straw or other organic materials” (Thanks Wikipedia!)

The name Adobe was derived from Adobe Creek, a river or creek that ran behind the house of John Warnock, one of the founders.But where is Adobe Creek? It’s located in Los Altos, California. Google has images of the creek.

Most of Adobe’s fame came from one pacific editing program called ‘Photoshop’.The Photoshop program was always somebody’s program of choice to edit there favorite picture, or create there company logo. However Adobe’s Photoshop is not a program for creating a document; but a program for editing a created document.

Photoshop is being constantly upgraded from version to version. They started labeling these version as elements with there version number after it (ex. Adobe Photoshop Element 6) until they got to Element 10. Adobe then decided that there program was as perfect as they wanted. After Adobe’s ‘upgrade pause’ for 3 years, they decided to work on a new Adobe addiction CS (Creative Suite), with the version number after it. Adobe recently finished Adobe Photoshop CS4, and they are currently working on Adobe Photoshop CS4 Portable, which basically means it’s the same thing as Adobe Photoshop, except it has a noticeably smaller program size.

Google Voice iPhone Application review

Recently I got an invite to google voice. I was very excited at the time, but soon discovered that it was not that useful if you only have one phone to begin with. Though I can really see the benefits of using voice with multiple phones, unless you have more than one phone I would say don’t get too excited if you receive an invitation to the beta.

With that out of the way here is where the actual review of the application comes into play. I really enjoy the interface of the application. It stays very true to the iPhone OS and it looks just like the call application already in your iPhone. The application uses the same visual voice mail interface, sms is very similar, the calling keypad is the same, and the history is very similar to call history. You could just about be tricked into using this application instead of the one already available to you. You also have the ability to add or remove numbers to ring from the settings tab.
The only thing that is a little annoying with the application is the load times the first time you switch between tabs. This load time is about half a second on wifi, but on edge it can be up to 5 seconds. This is no big deal but if you have less than 5 bars on wifi i can take a while.

Note: Also as you may have heard, Apple has rejected this application from the App Store. You can still install “GV Mobile” as it is called, through Cydia on a jailbroken iPhone.

Google Voice? I Think So.

Google Voice has changed my life ever since I got that magical email saying that I have been invited from Google to create a free Google Voice account. From the moment I picked my out new Google Voice number, to the moment that I received that first transcribed voicemail, I was impressed to say the least. Google Voice introduces a ton of already used features and some quite new features. Old features such as call screening, block calls, SMS, place calls, taking calls, and fowarding calls to other phones. But Google Voice has introduced some new features as well, including Listen in, Voicemail transcriptions, Personalize greetings, and shared voice mails. These new features have turned around the mobile phone era in an entire new direction. There will be a moment in time where I cannot find my phone, my phone is dead, or my phone is charging somewhere and I can just log on Google Voice and check my text messages or voicemails. There will also be a period of time when I walk into my house and I start to lose signal so I press pound on my mobile phone and it will ring my house phone to pick up so I can continue the call without them even knowing I switched phones. Google Voice is taking the mobile phone era and connecting it with the brand new web 2.0 era.

Today Google launched a new web service called Google squared. Unlike a traditional Google search Google Squared will return information in a spreadsheet format. It uses facts from the web to return results. So it is less of a search engine and more of an information database. So you would not search for something like “HTML tips” or “How to setup a web site”. A more reasonable search would be “US Presidents” or “Cloud types” as these will return actual facts.
Google says Squared could be useful when a user needs to make multiple searches to find the information they want. Upon completing a search you can sort, eliminate, and add to your results. It seems to me that Google Squared my be somewhat inspired by Wolfram Alpha and kind of seems like a much more advanced and expanded version of Wolfram Alpha.

Google Announces “Wave” Online Collaboration Too

Today Google Announced it’s new revolutionary “Google Wave” online collaboration tool. An amazing and sure to be a huge internet changing tool that integrates all of googles already famous Gmail, Blogger. It’s currently in testing and isn’t in public release, though it is available for certain developers. Also the whole project is open source! Meaning it will not only be modified by the google team but also by the developers and community out there. Building a strong efficient tool & with community feedback it will have it’s checks and balance sorted with ease.

This tool has great support for conversation like e-mail & and instant communication along with also document editing & blog communication , and it dosen’t stop there. Amazing live editing support & a great feature called ” Playback”

Basically it gives you the opportunity to playback a conversation that previously happened or a certain reader or partner who wasn’t included in the conversation in the past , to be updated on all that happened live and on the fly playback.

100% build off of the Google toolkit , an amazing open source project that I haven’t even scratched the surface of. An amazing web 2.0 changing project that I believe by late 2009 or early 2010 will already be booming & evolving each day.

[Tips] to organizing your Gmail Inbox

If your an avid user of the email provider gmail whether you access it from thunderbird, outlook , eudora or the web your inbox can get pretty bloated with messages , spam, etc. Here’s some of my tips to organizing and maintain a clean and efficient gmail environment.

FILTERS

Filters are one of the most useful organizing tools in email providers anywhere , whether it be gmail interface , thunderbird etc.

Filters essentially look for certain keywords, subjects, to’s, or from’s and then filter it somewhere.

EXAMPLE- Filter – Subject -Has keyword “Newegg” - Move message to “Online Sales” folder

that way all your messages are in their folders as they come into your inbox.

Other examples for filters can be

Twitter – Online Sales- Spam- Social Networks etc…

Labels

Labels , do as they’re called they label certain messages and can work in conjunction with filters.

Daily Maintenance

Even with all these tools at hand filters, labels etc. It’s nothing if you don’t do daily maintenance on your inbox. My method is as follows:

*Check Mail – Take Action =Delete, Keep in Inbox (archive) ,Reply etc, – Organize remaining Content ( so whatever you have left in your inbox whether it be conversations or reply, you can then set labels etc to keep your inbox and messages organized.

Handling Multiple Inboxes

Many people now use multiple gmail accounts for reasons like Personal Account , Business account etc. Having too many accounts can get hard to manage. Now what if you could manage all accounts within one inbox, it would make everything easier to manage.

Here’s where the new google labs feature ” Multiple Inboxes” comes into play head over to the google labs and enable it. Then go into the settings and set up access to your other account this will require confirmation on both ends.

My Method for handling my two accounts go as follows:

My two emails : adrianstech@gmail.com & kidgurucenter@gmail.com

I first go into adrianstech@gmail.com and set it to forward all messages to kidgurucenter this requires confirmation , after that i set a filter in kidgurucenter’s settings to label any messages from : Adrianstech@gmail.com and then tell the multiple inboxes plugin to put only content from that label. That way i have two inboxes in one panel.

Sound a little confusing her is my video tutorial explaining it.

Forwarding/Imap/POP

My last tip is covering forwarding if you ever wanted your inbox to forward your message to another address or for example you wanted your email to forward to someone else in your business Well Gmail makes it easy to set it up , just go to settings- forwarding options and put in the email and get your confirmation on the other account and your good to go.

Last but not least Imap/Pop services, all this does is push your email to clients on your desktop like – Thunderbird or outlook , its more trickier to set up but heres my guide for thunderbird.

Now that you have various tips and tricks to keeping your gmail inbox organize all you got to do is set aside time to GET EVERYTHING DONE and after that just keep your system going as you get new mail.

Always remember to these steps as well

-Empty Trash

-Empty Spam Folder

and of course try other things to make Gmail more a home environment for you,

-Set A personal theme

-Try out other Google Lab Plugins

-Try out Google Chat with contacts

etc…

Google Latitude

Today Google has yet another addition to their outstanding product/service line. Google Latitude. If you don’t already know latitude is an application that will run on most windows mobile, blackberry, symbian, iphone, and ipod touch devices. It will alert friends that you have approved of your current location. The software is already installed on T-Mobile G1′s with the latest firmware update. The service uses GPS and cell towers to pinpoint your location much like the current location finder on the iPhone. Don’t worry though, you wont get stalkers because you can remove a friend from receiving notifications at any time and you can also go off the map temporarily.

Help Get My Youtube Partnership Back….

Attention All Youtubers!, You can help by emailing support lines like Youtube, Google and Adsense sharing my story… summary they closed my account “Due to invalid Click” youtube takes like 6 months to sync the partner earning to adsense, so they expect us to monitor stats that arent there , also they state that as long as I or anyone im responsible for like a staff or co-workers dont click or encourage invalid links then im not responsible…..yet the closed it anyway…… So lets fight back email Youtube, google, or even the adsense program and ill also soon launch a youtube petition ,via video and everyone of you counts

Now its no the money that makes me mad that they took its the features in general i want to produce great content for my viewers and help spread the knowledge throughout youtube.

Now if that even means a non-profit partner program ill take it…. All i ask is for you guys to pass it to anyone you know or if you can take 5 mins of your day to email the support not demanding or anything for my partnership back but a complaint, a arguement anything just keep it civil. Just to get them to see , that they should’ve re-opened it in the beginning , its possible to get parntership again its just takes alot of work so all i ask of you all is this……
