Do you have a slow internet speed like me? I have sped up mine with a few tweaks and a few programs which are free (I don’t like for-paid programs). These quick tips will help you tweak your internet speed and help you save a few dollars on calling a repair man.
1. Run a virus scan
Before you tweak any registry keys and settings, you would want to check if a virus is causing the problem. If your antivirus picks up an infection, try Googling it and find out what the virus does.
2. Remove unnecessary protocols
By default, you have multiple protocols preinstalled on your computer, and each one of it uses a bit of your bandwidth. But if you add those all up, these could cause a bit of trouble both in security and speed. To do this you need to open Network Connections in Control Panel. Right-click on the internet connection you’re using and click Properties. A box which looks like this should come up:
Just click on them to see a description in the description box and uncheck the things which you don’t need. One warning though, never disable the protocol named Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) because without it, you will not be able to connect to the internet.
3. Tweak the registry
There are settings in the registry which would allow you to tweak your internet connection and speed it up, but they are hidden and very hard to configure. The solution to this problem is Cablenut. This program will help you tweak the registry and make your internet connection faster. Download the program and install it on your computer. Run the program and go to this link. The link I gave you is the settings calculator. It’s web-based so there’s nothing to download. Select your connection type, enter your download, upload speed and the latency time. If you are not sure about your download and upload speed, contact your ISP to determine them. To know the latency, you need to go to Start, Run and then type cmd, hit enter. A black box should appear. Type in the following: tracert adrianstech.com
You need to be downloading a large file while doing a tracert to determine the latency. When it’s done, feel free to cancel the download. Pick the highest number and that’s what you want to enter in the Latency field. Click Compute Settings, scroll down and you will see a button saying CCS File Download, click that and download the file. Go back to Cablenut and click File and then Open. Locate the .CCS file which you downloaded and open it. Click Save to Registry and then reboot.
4. Remove unnecessary stuff
Clean your registry and your temporary internet files. If you’re too lazy to do all the work (like me) You would want to download and install CCleaner and/or Spybot S&D.
5. If nothing works
Call your ISP and tell them about the problem
