Preview: Quake Live Closed Beta

quake-live-logo.jpgI wish I could tell you more about Quake Live. Sadly, their strict NDA (non-disclosure agreement) says that I can’t as much tell you what the interface is like (like you don’t know what Quake 3 looks like). But I can tell you I’m in it, and that’s enough. Let me tell you some things about it that won’t kick me out of the private beta.

Firstly, it’s good. That may be kinda basic, but it’s something that many games these days don’t offer. It’s based on Quake 3, so it’s dated, and that’s good! Even that rusty 386 can run it, let alone a hyperfast octocore desktop with the latest graphics cards. The game also is very simple, being based on a game from the 90s.

The game is wonderfully stable for a private beta, and I experienced no crashes. I did have the occasional Internet lag, but it was mostly because one of the servers I was on was in Chicago. There are only a few servers hosting multiple games, just like in any console multiplayer game. That’s all I can say about the connectivity at this point. The matchmaking is not bad and again, that’s all I can say about it.

If you’re on it, good for you! If you’re pining for an invite, who knows? There might be a contest here on it sometime in the near future…

This was originally posted on Michael Leung’s tech blog. But you never know, there might be a contest for it here too…
