Should I shut down my PC at night?

One thing that is asked over and over again is “should I shut down my computer at night.” Some people think that it’s bad for your PC while others say it doesn’t harm anything.
As you may know the only part of your computer that is negatively affected by leaving your computer is the hardware. Partly the hard drive is affected. Of used to be said that the process of your hard drive spinning down Is as harmful as 8 hours of running time. Segate says that that is not the case anymore. Segate also says that a hard drive should last for 4 to 5 years of running time.
With hard drive manufactures saying that spinning down is no longer bad for then than it is probably best for you to shut down at night. Though there are other ways for you to spare your hard drive without shutting down. You could put your computer in sleep mode where only your RAM (Random Access Memory) gets power. That way all your currently open applications will be saved in their current state. Another way to help spare your drive is hibernation. This will save window’s current state but not your open applications. Basically making widows boot faster next time you restart.

  • I think you are thinking like sukrat, but I think you should cover the other side of the topic in the post too...
  • @Kidguru
Ya, I never shutdown unless there is a couple of windows updates.
  • Great Post, I like to shut down for updates etc, and when im out for a long time , especially now with the ssd i dont have to worry about heating or spins but i still practice turning off every now and then to give the hardware a break and you never know when a power out may occur or something
