Up until now, Apple’s iPad has undoubtedly dominated the market when it comes to tablet devices. However, with Amazon recently unveiling their Kindle Fire device, could this all be about to change?
One of the main attractions of the Kindle Fire for consumers is likely to be the price, as it will reportedly retail for less than half of what it currently costs to purchase an iPad. The design of the Kindle Fire is based on that of the already popular Kindle e-book reader. However, this tablet computer version also incorporates f Google’s Android operating system, offering a multitude of additional features.
The 7 inch touch sensitive colour screen is specifically designed to stream movies and TV shows, as well as offer the standard access to Kindle’s range of e-books. However, unlike some of it’s tablet competitors, the Kindle Fire will not offer mobile internet access. Those who which to connect to the internet to play online games, such as Partypoker, or to send email, will need to do so via a WiFi connection, or a USB 2.0 (micro-B connector). There will also be the option for free storage of the user’s Amazon digital content in the Amazon EC2 cloud.
Each Kindle Fire device will also come with a free 30-day trial of Amazon Prime, which offers unlimited, instant streaming of over 10,000 movies and TV shows, as well as free shipping on many of the items available for purchase at Amazon.com. With 8GB of internal storage included, it is thought that the Kindle Fire is also able to support approximately 80 apps, plus either 10 movies or 800 songs or 6,000 books. Although it remains to be seen whether or not this tablet can overtake the iPad in terms of sales and popularity, it certainly looks like it has the potential to offer some serious competition.
